Volunteer Development Service Service / Community Education & Volunteer Service

Service Overview

Through volunteering with us, the general public, ex-offenders and ex-mentally ill persons are engaged in driving crime prevention education and offender rehabilitation activities in the community. The general public will have the opportunity to know the offenders and ex-mentally ill persons better, encouraging public acceptance. At the same time, ex-offenders and ex-mentally ill persons can rebuild their confidence, which is essential for their reintegration to society.

Scope of Services

1. Volunteer Training
We offer specialized social service mainly serving offenders, ex-offenders and ex-mentally ill persons. Therefore, every individual have to attend a basic volunteer training before they join our volunteer team to learn the basic communication skills with our service users and the important things to note when serving them.

2. Volunteer Services

Mass programs and groups in correctional institutions

Community volunteers organise mass programs and group activities in different correctional institutions to show care to inmates and enable them to have interaction with the outside people. Volunteers also assist social workers in various district magistrates’ courts, helping people who awaited trial and their families to relieve the worries and concerns. Furthermore, volunteers will provide prison visitation service, pick-up service, and organise birthday parties and other activities to help prisoners or ex-offenders maintain closer ties with their children, as well as to prevent intergenerational crime.

Volunteers are working hard to prepare for the “Sunday Rainbow” event at Lo Wu Correctional Institution. Volunteers will perform a radio drama for offenders. Volunteers conducted mass programs in different institutions in order to provide different entertainment and maintain correspondence with offenders.

Inclusive Service

Community volunteers and service users are providing volunteer haircutting services for the children of ex-offenders.

To aid their reintegration into society, we encourage our service users including ex-offenders, persons in recovery and ex-drug abusers to actively participate in volunteer service, such as hair cutting volunteering activities. These activities can also transform our service users into givers and help them understand giving is more blessed than receiving.

Community volunteers and service users conduct volunteer visits in the hospital.

Service users and community volunteers participate in soup-making groups in the hostel.

We encourage service users to work with community volunteers in providing services for other disadvantaged groups. On one hand, this allows community volunteers to have more understanding towards ex-offenders through interaction; on the other hand, it helps widen positive social circle of ex-offenders.

Community volunteers teach ethnic minorities to learn Cantonese and celebrate Christmas together.
